For Students

Here you will find help and tutorials on common questions and problems related to writing. We update this space frequently so if you’re looking for something and can’t find it, or have a suggestion, let us know and we’ll add it!

OUR SERVICES

Sessions with Writing Fellows. The Writing Fellows are typically PhD students from a variety of academic disciplines who are trained in writing instruction. You can find more information about the Fellows you will be working with here. Depending on the kind of help you need, Fellows will work with you to determine the best way to interact using email, Skype, or sometimes face-to-face (arrange for an appointment with the Fellows). You can email us letting us know about the class you are in and the assignment you want to work on using the HELP button on your right-hand sidebar or by clicking here.

Fellows will also schedule in person “pop-up” writing center events at SPS at 119 W. 31st St. at key eveningsĀ during the semester during which you may simply walk in for help or for a pre-arranged appointment. Watch this website and announcements from Student services for these events.

OTHER HELP

Our website also has writing-related help that you can browse on your own time. In most cases, we give you quick tips and pointers and link you to other sites with further information if you want to find out more.

Common Writing Questions. Have a small grammar question you want to look up quickly? Need a reminder of what APA citations look like? Browse our FAQ-style Common Writing Questions page here.

Assignments. What do your instructors want from the assignments they assign you? Why have they assigned responses and essays? Understanding your instructor’s point of view will help you tailor your writing more effectively, and (we think) get you better grades! Check out our guide that explains the different kinds of assignments and their different purposes here.

Drafts. Why draft? Do you really have to? (The answer is always yes.) How can you go from that first draft to the polished final version most efficiently? We have some ideas for you here.

How to use the Library. We have a great library system at CUNY but it can sometimes be confusing trying to find the books you need. See a handy breakdown of services here.

More Writing Guides. Want more help with different aspects of the writing process? We have that! See our complete list of guides and handoutsĀ here.

Still need to speak with us? Send us an email here. Please remember to include your full name, the course(s) you’re taking, and a short description of the assignment you’re working on.
